Ingredient Safety: Products with EWG Verified status are free from EWG’s list of concerning ingredients, including:
- Parabens
- Phthalates
- Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing agents
- Oxybenzone and octinoxate (often found in sunscreens)
- Transparency: EWG requires full ingredient disclosure for products to qualify as EWG Verified. This includes labeling each ingredient accurately and avoiding terms like "fragrance" or "parfum" without detailed breakdowns.
- Low Health Hazard: EWG rates products based on their potential health hazards. EWG Verified products must score low on the toxicity scale, reducing risks associated with allergens, hormone disruptors, and other harmful chemicals.

- Complete Fragrance Transparency: EWG emphasizes complete disclosure for fragrance ingredients, pushing brands to go beyond the generic “fragrance” label to list all individual fragrance components.
- Restricted Ingredients: Fragrance products must exclude ingredients known for potential risks, like phthalates, which are often used to prolong scent but have health concerns.
- Naturally-Derived Fragrance Preferences: EWG generally supports the use of naturally derived fragrance ingredients, such as essential oils, over synthetics, especially for products intended for sensitive skin or daily use.
