California Prop 65 Compliant Fragrance Oils

California Proposition 65 (Prop 65) is a law that requires businesses to provide warnings if their products contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. This policy applies to a wide range of consumer goods, including beauty and fragrance products, to inform consumers of potential risks.

General Prop 65 Policies

1. Chemical List: Prop 65 mandates warnings for products containing any of over 900 listed chemicals identified by California as having links to cancer, reproductive harm, or developmental issues. This list includes common industrial chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, and some compounds found in consumer products.
2. Warning Labels: If a product contains any of these chemicals at levels above the safe threshold, companies must include a clear warning label informing consumers of the potential health risks. This label typically reads: “This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.”
3. Broad Application: Prop 65 covers a wide range of products, from food and household items to personal care and beauty products, impacting manufacturers, retailers, and distributors nationwide.

Prop 65 Policies for Fragrance

1. Restricted Fragrance Ingredients: Some fragrance components, such as phthalates, styrene, and certain synthetic musks, are included on the Prop 65 list. These chemicals are commonly used in fragrances for longevity or intensity but require warnings if present above safe levels.
2. Transparency Requirement: Although Prop 65 does not require detailed ingredient disclosure, it mandates warnings for any fragrance product with listed chemicals above the allowed threshold, pushing brands toward safer formulations to avoid labeling.
3. Consumer Awareness: Prop 65 labels aim to increase consumer awareness around fragrance safety, particularly for chemicals with potential risks related to cancer or reproductive harm.

California has some of the strictest fragrance and consumer products standards in the world. These oils comply with current Prop 65 labeling standards and do not require any special labeling.  Documentation can be provided on request.
